Race Week is finally here – BOOM! It feels as though Ironman Texas has been a dot on a far away horizon for a very long time, so now that it’s all but a few days away I am beyond excited at the prospect of getting out there and doing my thing. Training has gone well, I feel good and I’m relishing the opportunity to see what’s in my Iron tank. I realise I’m still a relative rookie at the full distance – it will be my third Ironman, following Mallorca and Cozumel last September and November respectively – but those races were done largely off 70.3 training, so hopefully now I have a little more resilience and endurance for the longer outing. I have loved the training, particularly the longer runs and rides, and I know enjoyment and success in Ironman racing is as much about mindset and approach as it is anything else. I am here to race – and race well – but in the meantime, I will be making the most of a very lazy and restful final taper week. Taper time for me is a golden opportunity to watch some of my favourite British boxsets, with Fawlty Towers being top of the pile followed closely by Ricky Gervais’ Extras.
The marathon at Ironman Texas will be a special one for me – I’m doing it as part of a family fundraiser for the British Heart Foundation’s MyMarathon campaign. My sisters and I are all running 26.2 miles in May to help raise awareness and funds for the BHF. Our dad died of a heart attack in 2003, so it’s a charity close to our hearts. That’s enough from me – good luck to everyone racing @ IMTX. Have your best day out there and enjoy it! See y’all on the other side 🙂
